Design and Performance of Active Messages on the IBM SP-2

چکیده
This technical report describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of Active Messages on the IBM SP-2. The implementation benchmarked here uses the standard TB2 network adapter rmware but does not use any IBM software on the Power2 processor. We assume familiarity with the concepts underlying Active Messages. The main performance characteristics are a one-word message round-trip time of 51.0 s and an asymptotic network bandwidth of 34.3 MB/s . After presenting selected implementation details, the paper focuses on detailed performance analysis, including a comparison with IBM's Message Passing Layer (MPL) and Split-C benchmarks.

Low-Latency Communication on the IBM RISC
The IBM SP is one of the most powerful commercial MPPs, yet, in spite of its fast processors and high network bandwidth, the SP's communication latency is inferior to older machines such as the TMC CM-5 or Meiko CS-2. This paper investigates the use of Active Messages (AM) communication primitives as an alternative to the standard message passing in order to reduce communication overheads and t...
متن کاملA Multiprotocol Communication Support for the Global Address Space Programming Model on the IBM SP
The paper describes an efficient communication support for the global address space programming model on the IBM SP, a commercial example of the SMP (symmetric multi-processor) clusters. Our approach integrates shared memory with active messages, threads and remote memory copy between nodes. The shared memory operations offer substantial performance improvement over LAPI, IBM one-sided communic...

The IBM SP Switch-Connected NT cluster is one the newest clustering platforms available. In this paper, we discuss an experimental implementation of the Virtual Interface Architecture for this platform. We discuss di erent design issues involved in this implementation. In particular, we explain how the virtual-to-physical address translation can be implemented eÆciently with a minimum Network I...
متن کاملOne Step Closer towards a Realistic Model for Parallel Computation
We present a new model of parallel computation|the LogGP model|and use it to analyze a number of algorithms, most notably, the single node scatter (one-to-all personalized broadcast). The LogGP model is an extension of the LogP model for parallel computation CKP + 93] which abstracts the communication of xed-sized short messages through the use of four parameters: the communication latency (L),...
متن کاملDistant I/O: One-Sided Access to Secondary Storage on Remote Processors
We propose a new parallel, noncollective I/O strategy called Distant I/O that targets clustered computer systems in which disks are attached to compute nodes. Distant I/O allows one-sided access to remote secondary storage without installing server processes or daemons on remote compute nodes. We implemented this model using Active Messages and demonstrated its performance advantages over the P...
